Welcome to the eighth grade.  All of our work this year will be to prepare the students for a successful four years of high school.  In order to get our students to where we believe they need to be, we have outlined the following eighth grade policies and class requirements.  Please read this letter entirely and have your student return the signed portion of this form to their homeroom teacher.

 

Grading Policy:
The grading system consists of four categories with their respective weights.

 

Tests:                                    30%

Quizzes:                                  25%

Class work:                              35%

Homework:                              10%

Progress reports are sent home in the middle of each six-weeks grading period. 
Report cards are issued three weeks later giving you a formal report every three weeks.  Should you have questions at any time, please feel free to contact us.

Starting in September, you will be able to follow your students’ grades and attendance on GradeSpeed.  We will send home additional information about accessing GradeSpeed.

Student Agenda Book:
Each student will be assigned a Student Agenda book in which they will keep assignments and calendar events. Parents are encouraged to check and go over agendas on a daily basis with their child.  These will be distributed after Labor Day.

Tardy Policy:
            Students have five minutes between classes.  They should not be late to class.  The first tardy will result in a warming, with the second tardy resulting in a grade level detention.  8th grade detention is from 4:00pm to 5:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Failure to attend a grade level detention will result in administrative referral, which could lead to SRC or Suspension.

Dress Code:
            Students are to follow all of the school requirements of the dress code.  In eighth grade, we will be particularly rigid with regards to:

• All shirts must be either a collared navy blue shirt or a BMS school shirt and be size appropriate.
• Pants must be worn at the waist. 
• All undershirts must be white, gray, or black.
• Only solid navy blue sweatshirts or BMS sweatshirts may be worn in the classroom.  All other outerwear must be kept in the lockers.

8th Grade Behavior Policy:

• Respect others, the school, and yourself at all times by continuously following the HISD Student Code of Conduct.
• HISD policy requires cell phones, MP3s, and videogames to be left in lockers at all times.  If seen or heard, they will be turned into the main office.

Consequences:

• Verbal warning
• Student/teacher conference
• Parent/Guardian contact
• After-school detention on Tuesday (for Wednesday through Friday offense) or Thursday (for Monday or Tuesday offense).
• Referral to Assistant Principal. (A serious offense will result in immediate referral.)

Required School Materials:
            All students should have the following items by August 31st:

• Combination lock for hall locker (students will be required to use their locker)
• Black/blue pens and pencils
• Notebook paper
• One three-ringed binder for Language Arts class
• One three-ringed binder for History class
• One 3-Subject spiral notebook w/ pockets if you have Ms. Ondijo’s class
• One box of tissues for Advocacy class

*Additional supplies may be requested by individual teachers as needed.
*Teachers should be notified if student is unable to purchase any of the above.

Bienvenido al octavo grado!  Todo de nuestro trabajo será en preparación para un exitoso ano en escuela secundaría.  Para llegar al nivel donde nuestros estudiantes deberían estar, hemos incluido un esquema de las pólizas del octavo grado y requisitos de la clase.  Por favor, lea este documento completamente y firme la segunda página.  Esta página debe ser entregada al maestreo de “homeroom” con su firma por medio de su estudiante.

Póliza de Grados:
Tenemos cuatro categorías de grados y diferentes porcentajes.

• Exámenes                    30%
• Pruebas                       25%
• Trabajo en la Clase        35%
• Tarea                          10%

Reportes de progreso serán mandados a casa cada tres semanas.  Al fin de seis semanas, mandaremos la tarjeta de grados.  Si tiene una pregunta sobre el progreso de su estudiante, por favor comunícese a la escuela inmediatamente.

Empezando en Septiembre, usted podrá mantener acceso a los grados y atendencia de su estudiante por medio de computadora con el programa 'GradeSpeed.'    Mandaremos más información sobre “GradeSpeed” en las siguientes semanas.

Agenda de Estudiante:
Todos  los estudiantes serán asignados una 'Agenda de Estudiante' para organizar tareas y eventos de la escuela.  Es importante revisar las agendas con su estudiante diario. La agenda será distribuida después del día festivo 'Labor Day'.

Póliza de Tardío:
            Estudiantes tendrán cinco minutos entre cada clase y llegar tarde no será aceptable.  La primer ocurrencia resultara en una advertencia pero a la segunda el estudiante será asignado detención.  Detenciones serán de las 4:00 a las 5:00pm cada martes y jueves.  Si el estudiante no atiende la detención, la consecuencia es una referencia a la administración para una SRC o suspensión.

Código de Vestir:
            Estudiantes deben seguir los requisitos del código de vestir.  En el octavo grado, maestros serán especialmente estrictos en lo siguiente:
- Todas camisas deben tener collar y ser de color azul marino o una camisa de BMS de            tamaño apropiado.
-Pantalones se deben usar en la cintura.
-Camisetas usadas por debajo de las camisas serán solo blancas, grises o negras.
-Sudaderas (playeras) color azul marino serán permitidos en la clase.  Todo otro tipo de ropa exterior debe mantenerse en el armario del estudiante.

 

Póliza de Comportamiento:
-Respeto para todos, para la escuela y a usted a todas horas por seguir el código de conducta de HISD continuamente.
-La póliza de HISD requiere que teléfonos celulares, MP3 y juegos de video sean         guardados en el armario a todas horas.  Si se ven o son oídos serán confiscados.

Consecuencias:
1. Advertencia verbal
2. Conferencia de estudiante y maestro(a)
3. Comunicación con Parientes o Guardián.
4. Detención en Martes (por ocurrencia entre Miércoles a Viernes) o detención en Jueves         (por ocurrencia entre Lunes a Martes)

Materiales Requeridos:
Todos los estudiantes deben tener lo siguiente para el 31 de Agosto:
            - Cerradura para su armario.
- Plumas negras o azules y lápices.
- Papel de cuaderno.
-Una carpeta de 3 anillos para el tema de lenguaje.
-Una carpeta de 3 anillos para el tema de Historia.
-Un cuaderno espiral para 3 temas (con bolsillos se están en la clase de la Sra. Ondijo.)
-Una caja de papel tejido

*Notifique a el maestro(a) si el estudiante no puede obtener el material indicado.
