Hello, and welcome to the 2009-2010 school year at Black Middle School!  We are really looking forward to teaching your son or daughter.  This year we are focusing the majority of our time on improving our writing, reading, critical thinking, math, science, and social studies skills.  We believe these are skills that will serve your child well throughout his or her school years and beyond.
The following sections provide a brief overview on the ESL cluster policies and class requirements.  Please feel free to contact us if you ever have any questions or concerns.

Tardy Policy
Our Cluster follows Black Middle School’s tardy policy:  Attendance is taken at every period and if your child is more than 20 minutes late, your child will be marked Absent.

Class Rules
In addition to the HISD Student Code of Conduct, your child is expected to do the following:
1. Be respectful of everyone in the classroom.
2. Come to class ready to learn.
3. Do your best work at all times.
4. Be prompt to class.
Consequences
Verbal warning
Student teacher conference
Call to parents
Detention
Administrative Referral

Grading Policy:
The grading system consists of four categories with their respective weights.

Progress reports are sent out in the middle of each six week grading period. Students will have an opportunity to retake any tests for partial credit.

Report cards are issued three weeks later giving you a formal report every three weeks.  Should you have questions at any time, please feel free to contact us.

Starting in September, you will be able to follow your students’ grades and attendance on GradeSpeed.  We will send home additional information about accessing GradeSpeed.

Student Agenda Book:
Each student will be assigned a Student Agenda book in which they will keep assignments and calendar events. Parents are encouraged to check and go over agendas on a daily basis with their child.  These will be distributed after Labor Day.

Homework Policy:
All homework should be able to be completed during homeroom time.  In the event that your son or daughter can not turn in his or her homework, ten points will be deducted each day the assignment is late.  Assignments will be posted on the classroom board daily.

Extra Credit Work:
Students will have an opportunity to earn extra credit according to the teacher’s discretion.
