VI. Specific Agenda Items:
A. Saturday Tutorials: K. Booker
-Saturday tutorials will begin in January, after school starts. The focus subjects will be 6 and 7th math and reading, and 8th math, reading, science, and social studies.
-Title I monies will pay for it. Saturday tutorials will cost anywhere from $12,000-18,000.
-BMS will implement Success camp beginning late October. Success camp is a tutorial program for Special Education students in order to help the students be successful on the various TAKS tests they will take.
B. TLC Committee: B. Johnson
-The TLC is working on doing something for Mr. Smith’s baby. He was a member last year when his baby was born, and we as a school, never did any thing for him.
-TLC is also working on the winter holiday staff meeting. Membership will cut the cost in half.
-It is not too late for teachers to join the TLC committee. All dues are due to B.O’Finan.
C. Professional Development: J. Barnwell/N. Khan
-Professional Development has yet to meet. Prof Dev. will meet on Thursday, October 15th after school.
-The first action step is to create a survey in order to assess the needs of teachers.
-On Wednesday, October 7th, Sharon Montgomery will come to train BMS teachers on the TEA’s Personal Graduation Plan.
-The personal graduation plan entails that all students who have failed one or more sections of the TAKS test must have interventions (during the school day), documented on Chancery. PLC leaders will have a discussion on how to best divide the students in order to be fair to all teachers.
-On Wednesday, C. Richmond will also give a session on general overviews of testing.
- Community Marketing: T. Day, M. Jao, C. Richmond
-Math Family night will be on 10/29
-There will be a magnet performance on 12/10
-As the time approaches, maybe we should think of having a spaghetti night in conjunction with the magnet performance. This may encourage more 5th graders and their parents to come and preview the great programs that Black has to offer.
E. School Culture: M. Jao
Interventions
-M. Jao did a presentation of the current ASPIRE data to all PLC’s. The data showed projected student performance on the TAKS tests sans interventions.
-The data showed the aspire list of Tier I, II, and III students.
-Teachers were not able to log on after the presentation, so M. Jao printed out copies for the different subjects and placed it inside the respective PLC’s boxes.
-TIER I: There are voluntary tutorials after school in 6th grade math and reading.
There are also voluntary tutorials after school for 8th grade math and science.
-TIER II: D. Pascuale is teaching a writing and reading 7th grade enrichment class to students who are in Tier I and Tier III.
-S. Bigalow is teaching 6th and 7th grade math students in order to assist our Accelerate II population.
-K. Booker is working with our TIER III 6th graders on a particular language program.
- C. Dinneen is working with our TIER II 8th graders in reading.
-All 6th grade teachers are piloting the Word Generation program in order to increase Vocabulary and literacy.
Celebrations:
-6th grade PLC is rewarding students with good behavior with a mini field day on October 15th.
-7th grade PLC highlights their students of the week by framing it in the hallway.
-The ESL cluster has a star student of the week each week. The students are celebrated by seeing their name on a star placed on a bulletin board and by receiving a treat bag.
F. Advocacy: K. Booker
-October is college awareness month. Ms. Chang, at the student center, has planned various activities, including a door decorating contest in order to increase student awareness of different colleges in the United States.
- Budget: M. Jao
-We are 15 students under enrolled.
-We will loose $52,500 if we remain 15 students enrolled.
-Attendance for the first six weeks is 94.4%, which is lower than the past two years.
-The truant officer has already filed reports for 9 students who are chronically absent. Court dates are pending for them.
-Our mobility rate is steadily decreasing. Two years ago it was 42%, last year, it was 55%, and this year, it is about 18%
-Attendance and mobility help us to meet projection, which impacts our budget.
-Sped/Title I Stimulus funds have already been delineated to items that will continue to serve BMS in the future. The projections of different programs and items are as follows:
PSAT testing: $3,000
Saturday Tutorials: $12,000-$18,000
Apagngea: SpEd Funding: $14,000
Computer Lab: $30,000-45,000
Success Camp: Not yet projected.
Materials for Sped teachers: Not yet projected.
H. Letters from the Box: J. Anigbo
-Concerns about parking lot structure
-Pieces of the bond construction have already begun such as the installment of a central air conditioning system in the 6th grade.
-Bond members have also met with the science department in order to discuss the layout of science laboratories.
-Renovation of the parking lot will occur as bond construction progresses.
-Concerns about soap in the soap dispensers.
-M. Jao will let the plant operator know about this mistake.
- Old Business:
-There is no old business at this point in time.
- New Business:
-Enforcement of the sweat shirt policy has been difficult.
-Due to the fact that this is a 100% Title I school, it may prove burdensome for parents to go out and buy new sweat shirts.
-The new BMS sweat shirt policy is that all students must wear either a red, white, or navy blue solid sweat shirt. The sweat shirts may be hooded, but hoods are not allowed to be worn during the school day.
-M.Jao will send out a connect ed message on the 12th of October, along with a message on the report cards in order to inform students of this amendment.
-Mrs. Webb brought up a suggestion that next year, BMS could sell school sweatshirts for $20.
