SDMC Meeting
Minutes

  1. Roll Call (gain signatures of all present)

Members present: C. Luna, R. Hambley, B.Johnson, M.Jao, J.Anigbo, K.Livingston, N. Khan, T. Day.

Meeting called to order by R.Hambley at 4:07 seconded by B.Johnson

  1. Specific Agenda Items:
      1. Saturday Tutorials: M Jao for K. Booker
        1. M. Jao is waiting to see if we are receiving title I stimulus funding.  That will determine when we start Saturday tutorials next year

 

      1. TLC Committee: B. Johnson
        1. M. Evans received a plant for the loss of her grandmother,
        2. Nurse Bouldin received a card for the loss of her grandmother.
        3. K. Livingston received a gift card and car seat for his new baby.
      1. Professional Development
        1. Khan and Barnwell met with M. Jao
        2. Aug 9th Teacher use-work in classroom, prepare paperwork.
        3. January 3rd: Teacher work day
        4. June 3rd : Teacher work day
        5. If the district asks teachers to participate in Prof dev before August 17, then the district will pay the teacher.
        6. Aug 17th:  Elective teachers will be at Job alike.  Work on SIP and data disaggregation
        7. Aug 18th:  Team building at Dave and Busters and working on mission statements.
        8. Aug 19th PLC yearly goals and Department time
        9. Aug 29th Opening day procedures, faculty handbook, safety handbook, PDAS, etc.
        10. Ruiz wanted to know if we could take student I.D. pictures during the days of prof. dev.  Ruiz also asked about early registration.  Jao clarified and let her know that registration is done during the first two weeks of August.
        11. The SDMC is okay with the professional development.
        12. In order to have early dismissal days, we have to show how early dismissal days impact academic growth and development of our students.
        13. Schools can have up to 5 days of professional development for Parental Involvement.
        14. Schmidt asked for clarification: Parent conferences can be scheduled for those days.  M. Jao said it was not possible because the she has already informed the staff that we are not having early dismissal.  M. Jao would allow the staff to have early dismissal days if they voted.  C. Luna said that she would want parents to be more involved, she would like to have those days for parents to be more involved.  N. Khan said that she thinks we should have a vote with the faculty.  The problem is that the waivers for parental involvement days must be submitted tomorrow, so R. Hambley will create an electronic vote survey that is anonymous.  Can we just do a ballot on the SDMC box?  M. Jao approved.
        15.   M. Jao had B Johnson counted the sheets for the FAC and Technology waivers
        16. The waivers show 26 for and 9 against the status quo.
        17. 26 for status quo with the technology with 9 against. 
        18.  J. Anigbo stated that some teachers were confused about the technology waiver.
        19. M. Jao stated that we can meet the requirement by signing the waiver.
        20. E. Ruiz: Journalism teacher can be the technology teacher.  The technology teacher can be in the process of getting certified.
        21. M. Jao stated that she plans on hiring a technology teacher if a position opens up.  It also depends on who is coming back and our student enrollment.
        22. M. Jao is having a needs assessment on the last day of school.  She will bring these concerns to her boss.  One of the pressing issues is the need for a full time counselor.

 

      1. Community Marketing: M. Jao
        1. V. Nesby had a dance clinic last Friday.  There were 3 students who participated.  2 from Stevens, 1 from Oak forest.  They will be participating in the spring show case.
        2. M. Fields is going to the feeder elementary school bringing in course selection sheets.
        3. Mr. Billy was featured in the newspaper, the Leader.
        4. Melton Washington was also featured in the Leader, he is going to West Point.  Go Black!
      1. School Culture
        1. 7th grade is going to Buckhorn Ranch by Lake Houston on May 21st.
        2. Electives are going Bear Creek Skating.
        3. ESL is going to Moody gardens on the 21st.
        4. 6th graders went to Museum
        5. Pizza Inn for students who went to Saturday tutorials on the 21st.
        6. The 8th grade dance is on Friday, may 21st

      4. Letters from the Box: J. Anigbo
        1. Hambley was concerned by the amount of students in the building before 7.  He wanted to have the doors locked and teachers will use the east entrance to enter.
        2. Students are coming too early.
        3. M. Jao will send a global email to see if all the keys work.
        4. R. Hambley: PLC times to see if keys work.
        5. A. Collier comes in at 7:30 in order to increase safety in the cafeteria.
        6. The officer is here at 6:00a.m.

      6. Old Business
        1. Panther Power hour:  Meeting last Thursday.  Over half of the faculty did not vote, so therefore, the meeting was inconclusive.  Right now, because the majority of the staff did not vote, we did not have consensus to have it. 
        2. Bell Schedule: (TENTATIVE, PROPOSED)
          1. See attachment 1:
            1. Highlights:
              1. School begins at 7:45 for the students.
              2. Three minute passing periods.
              3. Three lunches.
              4. Classes are 85 minutes long.
              5. The day will end at 2:55.
              6. Teacher day will end at 3:30.
              7. Classes can not be 85 minutes because of PLC department time because there has to be 45 minutes of uninterrupted time.
              8. SDMC decided that we all met the requirement with the 85 minute classroom.
              9. Changes will be made: the school day will be from 7:30 until 3:15.
              10.  We are with-in 5 minutes of the vote.
              11.  Early dismissal has to be on a Friday due to the district requirements
              12.  On 4-day weeks, the 8-period early dismissal day will be eliminated to accommodate the holiday weeks.
              13. Calendar has to be set before School ends to Ms. Figueroa so she can set it up
              14. SDMC is okay with proposed with new schedule by committee.
              15.  Proposed to vote change A and B to A-Red day and B-Black day.
        3. Discipline/Policy Committee
          1. Met twice SRC and Accountability for faculty/students
          2. Attached Discipline/Policy CMTE report
          3. Ms. Ruiz has accepted to restructure and manage SRC for the upcoming year and have a clerk.
          4. Moved to 2nd floor annex
          5. Black cubical to separate students
          6. Look in the warehouse to donate cubicles
          7. Ms. Jao will purchase 5 cubicles
          8. Before suspension, should the parents spend the day at the school or should there be Saturday detention (pending on funding knowledge)
          9. Dress code addressed (see attached)
          10. Add skirt length, “At the knee”
          11. No form-fitting pants
          12. “Tan-colored Khaki pants only”
          13. “No house shoes or slippers”
          14. Change “Consequences” to 7th Grade to Day’s office; 8th grade to library for calling home due to dress code.
          15. Students will remain in SRC until parent remedies the dress code violations.
          16. There should be a clothing drive for students that do not have their needs met.
          17. PLC leaders and VIPS will help out with hall sweeps during advocacy when PLC leaders have it off.
          18. If they lost their ID, they must buy another one.
          19. There should be simulations on how procedures should be enforced. (Aug 20)
          20. PTO will donate locks next year.
          21. Suggestion: One PLC member should attend PTO meeting.
          22. Visit 2007-8 duty map with 15 minutes morning or afternoon.

Concerns:  M. Jao: will that give the teachers enough time to pick students up? B. Johnson: only if the students are on time.
B. Johnson: will that be enough preparation time for the students? D. Weatherspoon:  yes, she already spoke to Ms. Felicia.
D. Weatherspoon will adjust the times to make sure that all classes are even.  D. Weatherspoon also proposed a Panther Day of Monday where students go to all classes.
